È stato ipotizzato che quando il neutronio che forma una stella a neutroni viene sottoposto ad una pressione sufficiente dovuta alla gravità della stella, i singoli neutroni si rompono e i quark che li costituiscono formano la materia strana. A questo stadio la stella viene chiamata stella strana o stella di quark. La materia strana è composta da quark up, quark down e quark strange legati gli uni agli altri direttamente, un po' come accade al neutronio che è composto di neutroni; una stella strana è essenzialmente un gigantesco nucleone. Essa si colloca tra le stelle a neutroni ed i buchi neri sia in termini di massa che di densità; se si aggiunge una quantità sufficiente di materia alla stella strana essa collasserà subito in un buco nero.
