The Rock for Houston's Youth Concert (RHYC) is a benefit show spearheaded by local bands, Cerebro (www.myspace.com/cerebroband) and Rowe (www.myspace.com/3rowe), to increase the social conscience of music in the Houston area. Berthold Auerbach once said, "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." The RHYC is an opportunity for us to examine ourselves, appreciate what we have, improve the lives of others and wash away the dust, if only for a few hours.
The RHYC will benefit the local child advocate organization,
CHILDREN AT RISK
(www.childrenatrisk.org)
You may know CHILDREN AT RISK from reports on major news outlets like Fox26, Univision, USA Today, or NPR. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of greater Houston’s children through strategic research, public policy analysis, education, collaboration, and data-driven advocacy.
Watch the short video below for an overview of the important work conducted by Children at Risk.
Watch the video below on human trafficking, one of the many issues that Children at Risk addressed during the 2007 legislative session. The video covers human trafficking in Thailand and India. Unfortunately, human trafficking is also a local issue with more that 15,000 women and children trafficked through Texas every year to be labor and sex slaves.
Here are some of the 2007 successes led by CHILDREN AT RISK:
• 80th Texas State Legislature– Authored eight pieces of legislation,
five passing into law. Bills addressed human trafficking,
transparency in dropout calculations, and TYC (juvenile justice
system) reform.
• Houston’s Top High Schools– Produced a high school report in
collaboration with the Houston Chronicle highlighting the good and
the ugly of Houston public high schools.
• Univision Health Fair– Brought health information and services to
over 7000 Houstonians.
• Solutions to the Drop Out Crisis– Held a productive city-wide
conference drawing attention to possible solutions to our city’s
dropout crisis.
• Houston’s Children’s Summit– Launched event focused on the
status of our children.
• Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Series– Launched series
focused on educating law community and providing expertise on
targeted legal issues to those who serve children.
