About Me

SPEEDY

Speedy (Harold Matlaku), formerly associated with the afro pop group Bongo Muffin, has distinguished himself as a dynamic recording artist and actor since going solo in 2000.
His first single “Rumors”, released through Electromode in 2000, received tremendous response and airplay. The single rocketed to gold and enjoyed wide media coverage lauding his new appearance and style. This earned him a spot in the South African film “Hi-jack Stories”. The film caused an amazing stir at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Speedy’s performance landed him a television role in the series Gazlaam that ran three seasons.
Speedy’s second album “Sgubhu sa Mampela” again went gold almost overnight and his slogan was used as the SABC 1 promo slogan. Many international appearances have followed, opening for artists Boyz II Men, Stevie Wonder and Dru Hill. Lead singer of R&B band Dru Hill, SisQo, was so impressed with the sound and style of Speedy that the two recorded a song and was invited by SisQo to be a part of his latest music video, “Who’s UR Daddy”. In addition, Dragon Music Group, based in the United States of America, offered him a record deal.
Recently he re-released his album, “Evolution” with new bonus tracks as well a new face. Due to a great demand, once again his album hit gold and his hit singles “Le Ngoma” and “Busuku Ne Mina” have dominated airplay on current radio stations.
This fame has earned him a lead role on the TV series Backstage on E-TV which he started filming a week ago.
Speedy having already received two Sama awards with his group Bongo Muffin as well as Kora Awards, was nominated in 2006 for best afro pop album at the Sama Awards.
He has since traveled twice to the United States to record a couple of songs with SisQo, including the hit “She’s so Hot” which is featured on the legendary “MySpace” website. “She’s so Hot” has also been included on the Greedy Boyz Mixtape, which has already sold more than 60,000 copies on the street.
The song has also received positive airplay from radio stations in Virginia, Baltimore, Texas, and Philadelphia.
Speedy's new album Going Live, traces the musical footsteps of Speedy from an Afro pop-cum-soul singer - shows just how grown Speedy is in terms of his sound and voice. The new project, which is best described as Afro-pop music meets jazz and soft R&B, will surely earn Speedy new friends both in the music industry and his cronies.
He showcases his musical ability by singing straight from the heart - and some say he has shown an ability of reviving his flagging music career from the days when he started with multi-award winning group Bongo Maffin.
