J. Robert Spencer has been playing drums since the first time he heard “Tom Sawyer†from the album Moving Pictures by the rock group Rush. He started recording and writing music with a band formed in college. Back in 1992, the band was approached by a record label and invited to record an album. Unfortunately, most of the guys in the band got cold feet and didn't want to sign.
Bobby cut his hair and dedicated himself to the theater once more. When he was cast in his first Broadway show, Side Show, he was inspired by the music and lyrics (by Henry Krieger), and he started writing music again. "My heart and head were soaring with melodies andlyrics of my own," said Bobby. He bought a new acoustic guitar and within days, he was writing and playing his own songs.
A few years later, his song "I Believe" was signed by a publishing house in Nashville. The publishers never found a recording artist to make the song, and he eventually got the rights back. Bobby is still seeking someone to record it.
J. Robert Spencer was from the Orginal 2006 Tony Award winning Broadway Cast of Jersey Boys who orginiated the role of "Nick Massi".
Next he will be seen in Arena Stage's upcoming production of the recent Off-Broadway musical Next to Normal that will play Nov. 21, 2008-Jan. 18, 2009 at Arena's temporary home in Crystal City, VA.
