Order your copy of "live @ the Rock and Roll supermarket" Here and NowThe Mudgang started off as a prolongation of a Ghent Punk Band "More
Action" way back in november 1983. Luc MG (later Soapstone en Tom.e.Gunn ) en Paul Brusseel, at the time being rockabillies, wanted to play their favourite music (E. Cochran, G. Vincent, The Meteors, The Cramps,...) but then very loud en very raw. Jo de Bondt (Ze-Noiz, Pink Flowers) en Steven Janssens (The Spanks, The Whodads, Daan, Mauro, the Stiffs...) joined in cos' they could dig the concept.
The first year, being very young and all, they learned how to play properly. The live gigs were pretty legendaric. If they didn't show up drunk, they turned up stoned out of their heads, looting backstage frigs and having fights with sound technicians. As a concert promotor you were lucky if they even showed up at all. But when they arrived, packed out their gear and tuned in, they took a shot at the Gods: a Mudgang live gig was raw, dangerous, explosive, all hell broke loose... they were working class scum goin' underground.
The influence of obscure sixties punk bands, psychedelica, brutal spaghetti westerns and surf-instrumentals moved The Mudgang towards their own specific garage-sound. Taking long walks in the fields, took the band and his crew to higher grounds. We recall tracks like "dr. mushroom, "I came in the night", "The Daltons", "Shot in the back", "Hitch-Hiking Baby", " Cadillac", "You're gonna miss me", "Let's go riding" and "Dead City".In the highlights of their garage-period (1984-1987), they shared the stage with IGGY POP, GREEN ON RED, THE LYRES, LA MUERTE, CLAW BOYS CLAW, THE PRIMITIVES, THE PARANOIACS, THE SPANKS, and many others....One should admit that others ought to do it with a lot less.
When Steven Janssens (1987) and a year later Jo de Bondt (1988) left, the Mudgang moved away from it's roots. Tsjeete Rogge (Gorki) and Jo Vleminckx (Paranoiacs) came in and the result was the Mudgang's rock and roll statement "Travellin' Man" (1989), produced by Jan Vandenbergh (The Spanks). But some said, The Mudgang should have hits. So for the next record "Temptation" they hooked up with The Lau (The Scene). And indeed with a more mainstream sound they even popped up in Studio Brussels "afrekening" (1990) with the single "between you and me".What should have been the end of the beginning was the beginning of the end due to the rock and roll life and attitude of the Gang. By the end of 1990 some of the band members freaked out so much that things had to come to a grinding halt. Another weak attempt in 1991 with Paul Brusseel (normally drums) on vocals also bit the dust.
The Mudgang briefly popped up in 2000, they did 15 gigs and split up fighting again.
December 2007 two original members Luc MG (guitar-vocals) and Jo De Bondt (bass) reform The Mudgang again. Luc put his Pornorama
friend Maarten Keteleer on drums. Second guitar is played by either Steven Janssens, Mich Vanneste or Frank Zaman. And did we hear some rockin again?
I think we did so far!
July 2008: after the succesfull gigs of the last months, two live sessions have been recorded and resulted in the live cd "Live @ the rock and roll supermarket". Technician was Frank Zaman (Ze Noiz), who also produced with Luc MG. This album is released on Kinky Star records and will only be available on the internet. The CD however will be sold on concerts and via mail. The release was followed by the "live @ the rock and roll supermarket" tour during 2009.In June and September the band will work on other material to record another cd. This time not live but real studio-work.
