SOPHA

About Me

SOPHA formed in Rennes, France in 1997 by Nicola (guitar, bass, vocals) and Olyfen (guitar, piano, drums, vocals). They met in high-school two years before, learned to each other before started composing their own stuff. In the early days, SOPHA had a folk sound due to their acoustic compositions and their influences ranged from Joseph Arthur and Leonard Cohen to Nick Drake and The La’s. It’s the time of the first versions of The Leper In Your Dreams, Childhood Park, The last Goodbye and Lost And Vain that would be released on their second album. Then they recruited Yoan Garçon to play the electric guitar in the band and by the time, their songs changed sounding more indie. A eponymous debut album is released in spring 1999 on SIMPATICO MUSIC. Thirteen songs of their own, looking towards the other side of La Manche. Some of them, related to Blur, go back up Mersey, Birkenhead; others related to Portishead and Earthling venture into Trip-Hop. To note, Hoola Hoop’s drummer Nicolas Ramin joined in the song Grey December. One can hear him on drums and Keyboard. He will compose the music of Lazy Day. Another appearance is vocalist Hélène on Sit Back, Relax and later on My Eyes Have Seen You on their second opus. Endowed with a certain melodic sense and harmonies, SOPHA arouses the interest and curiosity of those who approach the band. And it’s no big surprise when a brand new label from Rennes make contact with them and offer a contract to an “official” re-work version of their demo album. The Band refused to sign, returning to their attic composing brand new material. They would performance live only once. They would rather concentrate on writing, composing and recording in their attics. In 2001, SOPHA released their follow-up album, Take My Hand (...before I’m gone).
