DI-O-RA-MA: a life-size display representing a scene from nature, a historical event, or the like, using stuffed wildlife, wax figures, real objects, etc., in front of a painted or photographed background.
Somewhere in the far storerooms of my head are dark cellars. Every so often I find myself rummaging back there with a dim light. If I am lucky I find a switch and something flickers into view. This music is my attempt to bring back, preserve and share what 's in this space.
A lot of acoustic instruments were used on this album. I have been preoccupied with a long pursuit of interesting sounds and the objects that create them. It has led me to some very unusual places and has given my home the demeanor of a museum. Several of the instruments were built in a shop I created for such a purpose and at my home away from home the Exhibition department of the American Museum of Natural History.
The Mellotron is used extensively. Recent renewed interest in this instrument has meant that I've been able to get my 30+ year old love into excellent working order again. It is an M400 with servo motor and has been rebuilt by the master, Jerry Korb. The tape frames are from Mellotron Archives and Streetly as well a rack from Sound Sales and the
originals . I also used a very unique analog synthesizer, the Yamaha CS70M .
