The Day The Music Died----In the Winter of 1959, Buddy Holly was touring with the Crickets on The Winter Dance Party. Also on the tour were Ritchie Valens, JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson, Dion and the Belmonts, and Frankie Sardo. The weather was freezing and snowy the entire tour. There were constant problems with the tour buses and everyone was miserable. But despite all that, all of the artists gave 100% on the stage and put on amazing show after show at each venue. Because of the constant problems with the bus, they were arriving at each venue just before show time so nobody had enough time to get a good night sleep or even wash their clothes. On February 2nd, 1959 the bus broke down again and was towed to their next venue, The Surf Ball Room in Clearlake Iowa. Buddy had enough. Before the show began, he chartered a 4 seater plane to fly himself and the Crickets to the next city. Waylon Jennings was playing bass guitar in the Crickets for this tour and because The Big Bopper had caught the flu and was miserably ill, he offered him his seat on the plane. J.P. gratefully accepted. When Ritchie Valens found out about the chartered flight, he began to bug the guitar player of the Crickets, Tommy Allsup all night about giving him his seat. Tommy denied his every request all night long. After the show, Ritchie was outside signing autographs and spotted Tommy again and ran over to him and said, "So, are you gonna let me fly man"? Tommy reached into his pocket and pulled out a 50 cent piece and said, "call it". As Tommy flipped the coin in the air, Ritchie said, "heads"! It was heads and the seat was now his. The three Stars arrived at the airport sometime after midnight and boarded the little 4 seater plane. Despite snow falling and the lack of visability, the pilot chose to fly the plane. Just outside of Clearlake, the plane crashed in a corn field killing the pilot and all three passengers. On the morning of February 3rd, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and JP Richardson were gone.
