Miami County/ Peru is located in North central Indiana. Peru is approximately 60 miles North of Indianapolis just off US 31. Miami County's population is 36,897. Peru population is 12,843. The Miami County Sheriff's department employs 10 merit deputies, 3 sergeants, 1 captain and the sheriff. The jail/sheriff's office is located in downtown Peru behind the Miami County Court House. The jail capacity is 50 beds and a new jail is in the works. They are expecting to break ground for the 200+ bed jail in 2008. The Sheriff's department generates approximately 11,000 calls for service per year. We have been recognized for the last three years in a row by the Indiana Governors Counsil for Dangerous and Impaired Driving for most arrests made during Indiana Operation Pull Over in the categories for a small agency and for a large agency.
