In 1932-1933, Joseph Stalin was responsible for events that nearly destroyed 25 percent of the Ukrainian population, including 3 million children. While the Holocaust took the lives of more than 6.5 million Jews in 9 years, the Ukrainian famine caused 10 million deaths in only seventeen months. It is considered one of the worst famines in history. This famine takes precedence in history because it was one that was intentional.
Considered to be the breadbasket of Europe at the time, farmers were subjected to give up their harvest for the sake of Stalin's failing collectivization agenda. While the rest of Europe was being fed, 25,000 Ukrainians were dying each day from hunger.
The Soviet Union successfully concealed the famine from the rest of the world through fabricated stories and lies written through journalists. To this day, Russia denies all accounts of a famine in the Ukraine.
