Band Members: Thanks for dropping by. If you'd like to learn more about Jeff Jarvis appearances and clinics, inquire about commissioned compositions, find more detailed biographical information, or see a listing of my published compositions and arrangements, please visit my website at the address above. Otherwise, I've uploaded some new tunes. Give them a listen, look through the photos, and if you'd like, make a friend request and send a message so I can learn more about your music! Here's some information about the featured recordings on this site:
BROTHERHOOD OF MAN comes from pianist Shelly Berg's tribute to Oscar Peterson entitled "The Will". This classic tune originally appeared on the classic "Oscar Peterson Trio + One" - the one being Clark Terry, who was joined by Peterson's original sidemen Ray Brown (bs) and Ed Thigpen (dms). We were fortunate to have Ray and Ed perform on this great arrangement by Shelly.
ELEANOR RIGBY is my swing/Latin arrangement of the classic Beatles tune. Bobby Militello (tenor sax), Bobby Jones (pno), Fred Stone (bs), Steve Curry (dms), and Rey Rivera (congas) join me on this fun piece. I recently wrote a jazz orchestra arrangement based on this version. Check out the MySpace site for the California State University Long Beach Concert Jazz Orchestra to hear it. http://www.myspace.com/concertjazzorchestra
FOLLOWING FOOTSTEPS was written and recorded as a tribute to my father during his last days. John Jarvis was also a trumpet player - not an improviser or a lead player - but a musician with a beautiful, warm sound. The title refers to my ongoing quest to follow in his footsteps as a player, teacher, and person. I'm joined by Bob Mintzer (tenor sax), Shelly Berg (keyboard), Matt Harris (keyboard), Grant Geissman (guitar), Freddie Washington (bass), Ndugu Chancler (drums), and Brian Kilgore (percussion).
Thanks again for visiting my site and have a great 2008!
Influences: Classically trained, I became involved in R&B and Latin music before seriously pursuing jazz. As a trumpet player, I'm inspired by the music of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Booker Little, Claudio Roditi, Woody Shaw, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Guido Basso, Blue Mitchell, Tom Harrell, and others. And like any writer, my compositions and arrangements are influenced by musicians I've played with and/or listened to - such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Rob McConnell, Sergio Mendes, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Bill Finnegan, Frank Mantooth, Claus Ogerman, Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Sammy Nestico, Ivan Lins, Mike Tomaro, Michael Franks, Bob Mintzer, Rick James, Fania All-Stars, Eddie Palmieri, Earth, Wind & Fire, Thad Jones, Prince, El Gran Combo, Oliver Nelson, Lennie Niehaus, Frank Sinatra, Funkadelic, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Art Blakey, and others.
