Dr. Vladimir Ivanoff was born in Bulgaria, received his doctorate in musicology at Munich University, studied lute and historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and at the Music Academy, Karlsruhe, received training in percussions with different traditional musicians. After post-doctoral research projects in Venice and Munich, he started lecturing at various European and American universities. He published several books, contributes regularly to music journals and encyclopaedias and lectures at international symposia and conferences.
Ivanoff is founder and musical director of the ensembles 'Sarband' and 'Vox', with whom he performs in concerts, scenic projects, radio-, TV- and CD-productions all over Europe, Asia and in the USA.
As a CD-producer, composer and arranger he works with numerous artists from the most diverse backgrounds, amongst them: Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Megapolis, Concerto Koeln, The King’s Singers, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He received two Grammy-Award-Nominations in 1992, two Echo-Klassik-Awards in 2003 and 2006. In 2007 he was awarded with the "Premio Mousiké" for the diffusion of Early Music in the Mediterranean. In 2008 he receives the German Worldmusic Award.
Since 1986, he endeavours not only to mediate between the theory and practice of music but as well illuminates and strengthens the connecting threads between the Orient and the Occident. He revives and gives new spirit to what can sometimes be described as the rather dry area of Early Music without dispensing with musicological scrutiny.Der gebürtige Bulgare Vladimir Ivanoff studierte 1977-87 an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Musikwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte und Theaterwissenschaft. 1982-86 studierte er an der Musikhochschule Karlsruhe und an der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel Renaissancelaute. 1987 promovierte er mit einer Dissertation über das früheste bekannte europäische Lautenmanuskript. 1990-92 arbeitete er mit einem Stipendium der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft an dem Habilitationsprojekt „Europa und die Musik des Orients“.
Er gründete die Ensembles 'Consortium Monacense' (1993), 'Sarband' (1986), 'Vox' (1989), 'Metamorphoses' (1993) und 'L'Orient Imaginaire' (1996).
Seit 1985 nimmt er Lehraufträge an den Universitäten München, Bochum und Oldenburg wahr, hält Vorträge auf Symposien und Kongressen in Europa, den USA sowie im Nahen Osten und veröffentlicht Artikel in verschiedenen Fachzeitschriften.
Als CD-Produzent, musikalischer Leiter, Komponist und Arrangeur arbeitet er mit zahlreichen Künstlern aus den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen zusammen, u.a.: Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Megapolis, Goethes Erben, Concerto Köln, The King’s Singers, Berliner Philharmoniker.
Vor allem als musikalischer Leiter des interkulturellen Ensembles 'Sarband' konzertiert er seit 1986 weltweit und veröffentlichte zahlreiche CD-Produktionen.
Für seine künstlerische Arbeit wurde er mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet: u.a. 2 Grammy Nominations 1992, und der Echo Klassik 2003 und 2006. 2007 erhielt er den "Premio Mousiké" der Region Apulien für die Verbreitung Alter Musik im Mittelmeerraum, 2008 den Deutschen Weltmusikpreis.
