About Me

Dissipation... Midnight, Mondays (Show updated monthly), on Radio Reverb 97.2 FM.
Often, the short waves can take on the feel of a roaring ocean, as the rushing static crash of the cosmos rains down on the broadcasts. Voices of culture wrapped in the squeal of industrial by products babble and throb, battling their way past the fax machine clicks of ocean bound weather reports. Opera singers pour out their lungs to the automated bingo callers mantras of the intelligence underworld. Signals Fading, rising and falling, nearly sinking, while the listener struggles at the controls in an attempt to rescue, recapture and keep the path open to that distant place…
The voice that emanates from our radio has jumped over a gap, like an electrical spark, it travels from one place to land in many others. A chord has been severed. The voice leaps from the body, no longer physical but spiritual, ghostly and omnipresent.
'Dissipation' is a show where artists are encouraged to utilise and experiment with the medium of radio as an artistic space, where art can happen in many places at the same time, while leaving the artist little control over the final outcome of their work, or the listeners reaction or response. In short this is a chance for artists (including many who would not consider sound as their primary discipline) to place sculptural items upon the aether.
“As for the radio's object, I don't think it can consist simply in prettifying public life. Nor is radio in my view an adequate means of bringing back cosiness to the home and making family life bearable again. But quite apart from the dubiousness of its functions, radio is one-sided when it should be two it is purely an apparatus for distribution, for mere sharing out. So here is a positive suggestion: change this apparatus over from distribution to communication. The radio would be the finest possible communication apparatus in public life, a vast network of pipes. That is to say, it would be if it knew how to receive as well as to transmit, how to let the listener speak as well as hear, how to bring him into a relationship instead of isolating him. On this principle the radio should step out of the supply business and organize its listeners as suppliers. Any attempt by the radio to give a truly public character to public occasions is a step in the right direction.” Bertolt Brecht. The Radio as an Apparatus of Communication. (1932).
Shows can be streamed from this site (in three parts). Each show will be posted 28 days (approx) after its initial broadcast."
