About Me

I was born into a family of very talented musicians and raised in a coal mineing community (coal creek) lake city, tennessee, this is a very small town north of knoxville, located in (them-thar-tennessee-hills) just off I-75 n., in those days most of our weekend nights were spent playing music and going to church on sunday, at about 7 years old my mother gave me her old (stella) flat-top guitar, my uncle made and installed a raised nut on the neck raising the strings about 1/4" and with an old shot glass and a straight guitar pick i started learning to play steel guitar sounds, on most weekends we had musicians at our house picken'n'grinnen, so i got plenty of practice, since all my cousins, aunts & uncles, infact my mothers whole family from grand dad down, could sing, or play any instrument they wanted to, so being raised with music all around my small world, kinda made it more interesting for me to learn to play an instrument, my first desire to play pedal steel guitar came from my uncle junior housley, my mom,s younger brother, at that time he was playing a (hiwaiian) lap type steel guitar, and later built himself a (he said the first) pedal steel guitar, and in the early 1940s formed a touring country music band (which were made up of my cousins), THE TENNESSEE VALLEY BOYS. they toured the north eastern u.s., around the dc. md. aera for several years. I like most all types music, but especially music that has feeling or a meaning, i play most any type, style, but my first choice is classic or older traditional country, gospal country, southern rock, jazz, and some top 40 country, or what ever comes along at the time, i just love and enjoy playing music, or even playing dobro in a blue grass band.

Influences: THANKS, to a long time friend and a super fine steeler, big Jim Vest of nashville, tenn. jim was an inspiration & mentor early on, and very instrumental in helping me to change the set up and modify my old 1952 fender 1000 steel guitar, to achive the (nashville sound), i have picked up a few tricks along the way from my friend tommy white, also a super talented steeler, and other pro-super pickers like Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Curley Chalker and Lloyd Green, with their unique styles and superb talent, have inspired steelers all over the world like myself, to try harder at gaining the knowledge and understanding of this great instrument, and to achieve a higher standard and goal, in their steel guitar picken profession. many thanks to all.
