"Fifty-four years ago in August 1944, while coming back from Casablanca, Africa, on a hospital airplane, I remember seeing the Statue of Liberty and getting a sensational feeling of a free world. I think today, what if we would have lost the war? What would our lives be like today: Holocaust, lack of freedom, no voting, or no free speech? Thanks be to God that we won the war. The Flag and the Statue of Liberty mean a lot to me,as symbols of freedom. I gave up the use of my right arm to protect these things; others gave even more than that. I have never missed my right to vote! I am proud to be an American and I'm thankful that I live in the United States."
