Dj Laurel

BIO: DJ Laurel (Lavr Berzhanin) has been collecting vinyl since 1999. He was the first in Belarus to play what is called NuJazz, and Latin and Intelligent Broken Beats as well, representing the music from such labels as Compost, Ubiquity, Schema, Hospital & Good Looking. Later on the influence of Tru Thoughts (Brighton) has made his musical accents move closer to raw funk&soul, intelligent breaks. At present DJ Laurel still remains the only professional DJ with intellectual and creative ideas in the musical culture of the country, having gained the sympathies of many representatives of Belarusian independent culture and not only within the musical sphere. In 2005 the DJ began working in the sphere of booking of famous musicians. He has organized parties with Jazzanova /Sonar Kollektiv, Germany/; Clara Hill/Sonar Kollektiv/, Robert Luis /A&R Tru Thoughts,UK/; Bonobo/ Ninja Tune/; Joe90, twice /Futureboogie, Kiss 101Fm,UK/; Florian Keller /twice, Compost,Into Something, Germany/; T-woc aka Michel Donohoe /Alpahabetset,Ireland/; 7samurai/Gamm,De/; Mc Coppa/G-stone, Au/; Valique/Freestyle Rec.UK/, Gruyere dj /New Cheese Rec. Sp/ Played together with such dj’s & producers like Montefiori Coctail,Gabin, Jake Wherry(The Herbaliser), Up, Bustle and out, dj Food, Jason Boardman, The Brand New Heavies, The Karminsky Experience, Nickodemus /ESL, Wonderweel/. In 2005 he was invited for cooperation with Belarus Free Theatre and worked on the soundtrack for “Generation Jeans”, a play by independent Belarusian playwrights Nikolai Khalezin and Natalia Kolyada (www.dramaturg.org). Already having had an experience of making a musical accompaniment for silence movies, Laurel creates a deep and original soundtrack for the plot line of the play and plays it live from the stage during the performance. Today “Generation Jeans” is a real happening as it is an unbelievable experiment of collaboration between professional theatre and modern club culture. The performance gets the most positive references of well-known editions and mass-media worldwide. The project has been on a tour to Russia and performed successfully at prestigious theatrical festivals in Baltic and Western Europe, and it continues winning the sympathies of both native and western spectators.
