"Windswept B for Barbie" was born on October 25th, 1999 to a breeder of champion line Miniature Dachshunds in Australia. In December 1999, she was shipped along with at least one litter mate sister to Pet's Central, a specializer in selling purebreds supplied by Australia breeders. Because Australia has more stringent quarantine regulations than Hawai..i, there was no need to quarantine the breeders' puppies.
KAYCEE'S ARRIVAL
On December 26th, 1999, 3 days after this black and tan smooth's arrival in Hawai..i, "Windswept B for Barbie" became a part of our family. Her papers hadn't arrived from Australia yet so she was not given a call name based on her kennel name. Instead, Casey was decided upon for its meaning of "brave" and since it's a relatively popular name for dogs and humans, the spelling was changed.
KAYCEE'S PERSONALITY
Within days it became obvious that she possessed typical sausage dog tendencies: a deep need to be near family members which resulted in her following everyone and separation anxiety, to guard her new home, and to stick her nose into everything.
A NEW FRIEND
Kaycee was joined by a Lhasa Apso in 2001. He became her best friend - and most unexpectedly - her mate. Just a week before he was neutered, they "got together" and just that one time resulted in counting the weeks until some time in January 2002. Three puppies were expected.
THE PUPPIES
The 3 pups were born in a relatively short time in the master bathroom on January 16th, 2002. The surprise came a couple of hours later on January 17th when a 4th arrived and an even bigger surprise came when the 5th arrived!#1 - female, was a mix of brown, black, white, and tan fur of medium length. Rough coat. The biggest in size and eating.#2 - female, black/tan with long fur. Rough coat with smooth, softer areas. The feisty one.#3 - female, same as #1 but smaller. The mellow one.#4 - male, black/tan with medium hair, smooth coat. The "cutesy" one.#5 - female, same as #1 and #3 but much smaller. The runt - almost as feisty as #2.Puppies #1-#4 were sold and #5 remained in our household.
AN UNEXPECTED GOOD-BYE
On a Sunday in August 2005, Kaycee suddenly started dragging her backside. The next day it was obvious this wasn't a passing thing so off to the nearby vet it was. After an exam and x-rays, medication was prescribed. There was no improvement so a few days later, there was another trip - this time to a different vet - and the news was rather grim. After that examination and evaluation, it was straight to an expert veterinary surgeon for an emergency consultation. By that time, Kaycee's breathing was labored and the surgeon said what was already obvious - she was having trouble breathing and would not recover. Her neurological system was shutting down and if she wasn't euthanized, she would in essence suffocate to death because the muscles to breathe would not be able to function.
At 2 months short of turning 6 years old, Kaycee was gone.
