FLAG PARTY

The 1st Island Getaway FLAG PARTY took place on May 26, 1999 as an introduction to Atlanta’s Caribbean Carnival weekend (Memorial Day weekend). The concept of the original FLAG PARTY was to encourage people from Caribbean countries to show their pride in their respective country by bringing their flag to the event. The FLAG PARTY also serves as a visual testimony to the diversity of Atlanta’s Caribbean community, as many countries are represented at the event.The FLAG PARTY was not necessarily planned to be an annual event, but the success of the original event in 1999 was overwhelming, and the event has continued to grow and evolve over the past eight years. While the Caribbean community remains as the focus for the event, people from Latin and African countries have become more involved in the event over the past few years. At the 9th Annual FLAG PARTY, countless countries were represented as more than 1,000 people attended the event.This year’s FLAG PARTY (10th Annual) will take place on Thursday, May 22, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia. Many people in the Caribbean community eagerly anticipate the FLAG PARTY, as it has become known as "the official start of Atlanta’s Caribbean Carnival weekend!"
