Founded on a kitchen table in the late 90's, The Phunkie Decknicians perfected their craft on an improvised DJ booth in the kitchen of a small apartment building just inside of Tempe Arizona. A few demo mix tapes put out here and there, going to parties such as Red Monkey and Kind Fridays, Greg Taylor and Brian Cabby officially created the phunky buzz! They first got a shot in the public spotlight opening for John Howard at Arizona's infamous Kind Fridays. This turned into a regular gig for the Phunkie Decks but that was just the start.
One night Greg and Brian compiled a mix that did not sound like any DJ set out there. It was a fresh new sound that would be sought after by legions of fans from around the globe. Thanks to Napster, PD was able to successfully leak their compilation by tagging it with other famous names, so it would pop up in a search. Nothing like a little shameless self promotion!
Soon after PD got a ton of hits, and tracklisting/booking requests from around the world, people caught the phunkyfever for sure! This allowed the crew to expand their fanbase outside of Arizona as well as the U.S. More gigs were sure to follow as well as label interest for production. But without warning, the sounds from the crew suddenly stopped. Just when a huge buzz was about to burst, the group was forced to split for mysterious reasons, still unexplained to this very day, leaving everyone who supported them wanting more!
Over the next couple of years, Greg and Brian still got a ton of requests for the mixes, and any other songs that they had compiled. Forums, even 5 years after Vol 2 was released, still are wondering just who the Phunkie Decknicians are, and if they will ever come back.
Well the answer is YES!!!! Even though The Phunkie Decknicians are still in different states, Greg and Brian will be putting up new tracks, leaking new mixes, and maybe one day soon reunite as the great duo of funky house music.
