North American Solidarity
A Movement of Movements
North American Solidarity was established to assist in the radical change that is increasingly becoming a practical necessity for the survival of human dignity and life on this planet. We self-identify as one of the millions of small movements that collectively form an historically unprecedented global movement for human and environmental rights. We are one of millions who are fed up with the power, greed, and tragic self-interest of our so-called leaders and their corrupt system. We are here to make the assertion that another world is possible . . . and then prove it. All are free to join us in that effort.
Purpose
For those who do not search for golden crumbs in the corporate media and have yet to tap into the independent media sources that cover our global movement, we are here to dispel the illusion of fragmentation. The idea that all these problems we now collectively confront, and are struggling against everywhere, are not integrally connected and part of the same thing is the primary illusion that we want to smash. Our job, and yours, is education and integration in this respect.
As we search for truth and answers in the ashes, we gain a sense of our own identity and our collective place in history. Our analysis suggests that we have reached the now or never point, and it is our place in history to act - fervently, with passion, determination, a love for all life, and joyous irreverence.
The unifying thread of all struggles for the environment, life, and human dignity is a single enemy. That enemy is a global economic system that is ruled by corrupt banking institutions, corporate dominance, a wealthy investor class, and all those governments that support it and are filled with politician’s whose power rests ultimately on compliance with it. We believe that this enemy can be beaten. It’s authority is ultimately illegitimate and it rests on a foundation of false precepts, moral bankruptcy, the suffocation of the human spirit and ecological insustainability. North American Solidarity is only one small part but as us activists like to say, we are everywhere, a global movement of movements.
Analysis
The global economic system is not without weak points. The first weakness it has (up until now it has been one of its greatest strengths) is our own compliance. Our own irresponsible over-consumption has fueled its rise to dominance. We need not comply. Creating economic autonomy and sovereignty over local resources is not only an enlightened moral choice, but an empowering solution that builds direct democracy.
The second weakness is the fact that it relies on the continuously increasing consumption and extraction of global resources. With resources running out in existing “wells†of industrial resources, investors and corporations are seeking new, untapped reserves (think rainforests and rivers, the tar sands in Canada, sacred indigenous lands, all those places yet to be destroyed). Access to those resources relies on the direct oppression and use of force against the communities who live in or near these sacred places. As a result, thousands of local resistence movements rise up daily against corporate resource grabs. They need our support!
The exploitation of these sacred places is not economically viable if it cannot be transported and traded efficiently. To facilitate this transport and trade, the global elite have begun super-infrastructure projects all over the planet -infrastructure projects that if stopped will protect what we have left. So its now or never. We are everywhere so lets Act, as part of a Global Movement, to stop super-infrastructure projects that threaten all those places yet to be destroyed -the sacred places.
What we do:
As our name suggests, we are involved in a lot of networking and solidarity building. In addition, our educational organizing is focused on bringing speakers, media, and events to Portland State Campus. We will be making an appearance at this years Convergence for Climate Action and have worked with Students For Unity to bring multiple speakers and film-screenings to PSU. We are currently working on creating a number of educational workshops and are actively creating media and educational resources. Join us, and who knows, you could be touring the Pacific Northwest giving your own unique workshop on something pertaining to the struggle.
On February 4th we are helping to bring two activists and researchers from the Durban International Climate Justice campaign against carbon trading, along with Cascadia Rising Tide, to campus. In the future we plan on bringing speakers from Columbia River Keepers, Heart of America (against the Hanford nuclear waste facility), Mexico Solidarity Network, Root Force, and possibly the Beehive Collective.
We focus on bridging the gap between the local and the global, between the economic and trade justice movement and the environmental and climate justice movement. The human race is now facing three major crisis: the end of fossil fuels as a viable energy source, climate chaos, and widespread economic disparity. All of which require a solution that strikes at the tap-root of these problems. Therefore, we believe that a revolutionary change in the global economic structure is a practical necessity for the survival of life, liberty, and our ecological support system. Help us help the world to accomplish this daunting task.
