The Village Underground

About Me

Certain locations have their own destiny. The “Village Underground” is located in the basement of what was once the legendary “Gerdes’ Folk City”. In the 60’s Greenwich Village spawned the folk-rock craze that swept the country, and “Folk City” was at the center of it all. Everybody who was anybody played folk city in the 60’s. Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter Paul and Mary, John Lee Hooker, Richie Havens, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Roger McGuinn, and the Monkees were regular performers. When “Folk City” closed the country lost one of its most important proving grounds for young talent, and Greenwich Village lost its reputation as the city’s most important neighborhood for live music.
When the historic space on 3rd street became available in 2000, Noam Dworman (former Café Wha? owner) and his good friend and partner George Buchalter saw a chance to rekindle the musical importance of Greenwich Village. Thus the “Village Underground was conceived to be the very best small club – ever. The “Underground” was built from the bottom up to meet the standards of the most demanding performers. The sound and lighting at the Underground outdo most venues twice as large. Throw in a multi camera closed circuit video system, and you have the most unusual room of its size anywhere.
Today, the “Village Underground” is the best place to hear live music in New York City. Routinely booking acts that usually play rooms 2 or 3 times the size – the “Underground” gives the discerning music lover a chance to see some of the world’s greatest performers in an utterly intimate setting. The "Underground" boasts the most diverse booking policy in the city - the only thing our acts have in common is their quality.
Citysearch.com writes “Surrounded by side booths and candle-lit tables, the intimate club's low stage is bathed in blue light. A step up in the rear--where political posters on naked brick walls recall the Village's radical bohemian past--more tables, ample standing room and a long, polished bar accommodate the crowd. Sight lines and sound are impeccable”.
The “Underground” offers Live Music every single night, except on Saturday’s when it becomes a trendy sophisticated dance lounge.
~ Sunday night offers the world famous open-mic showcase hosted by Sony records A&R man Ron Grant & Melody Daniels. Celebrities and amateurs share the microphone on a weekly basis. Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Elizabeth Withers, Chrisette Michelle, Joe, Destiny’s child Michelle Williams and many others have all been known to drop in.
~ Most recent to the lineup is “Black Velvet Monday” hosted by recording artist singer/actress Cheryl Pepsii Riley. Black Velvet Monday offers a jam-packed diverse audience made up of talented vocalist, musicians and open mic goers all showcasing their latent.
~ Of course there’s also New York City’s most celebrated cover band appearing every Wednesday and Thursday. The “Underground” house band is a dynamic and entertaining party band offering crowds an exhilarating, high-energy experience. It’s known as the party band choice for many of New York’s most discriminating party givers. Sting, Martha Stewart, Michael Jordan, Ray Romano, Muhammad Ali, and Michael J. Fox have called when they needed top notch entertainment. A favorite of John Mayer, he is known to drop in from time-to-time and JAM with the band.
~ Friday night is “UnionN” night. The UnionN”, former members of the world famous Café Wha? House have collaborated to create one of the most unique musical groups in New York City that brings a high-octane blend of non-stop R&B, Funk, Reggae and Classic Rock. The New York Post describes them as a “Power house talent – you’d be hard-pressed to find more exhilarating evening out”.
This completes the Village Underground formula. They work very hard to make the “Underground” the best music room in the world – we hope you enjoy it.
