In the year 2371, while searching for a Maquis vessel that had disappeared in the Badlands, the U.S.S VOYAGER, a state-of-the-art Starfleet vessel with Captain Kathryn Janeway in command, encountered a spatial distortion that transported Voyager and the Maquis ships to the Delta quadrant, some 70,000 light years away. At maximum warp the return trip to the Alpha quadrant would take over 70 years. An alien being known as the "Caretaker" was responsible for the ship's displacement. He had been responsible for the safekeeping of the Ocampa, but aware that his own life was nearing its end, he had brought many different species to the Delta quadrant in search of a mate. To prevent the Caretaker's facilities from being abused by other species such as the Kazon, Janeway chose to destroy the Caretaker's station after he died, but in doing so she closed off Voyager's road home to the Alpha quadrant. The crew of the Maquis ship reluctantly joined forces with the Voyager crew. As they began their long journey home, the crew of Voyager searched for ways to shorten the trip, such as wormholes, or borrowing the technology of other species. The Delta quadrant was virtually unknown to humans, and many of the alien species they encountered were new. During their hardship-filled journey, the crew of Voyager encountered the Borg, a hybrid life form that is the biggest threat to the Federation in the galaxy. However through Janeway's intelligence and cunning, she and her crew were not only able to overcome the threat, but also rescue a human female, Annika Hansen (Seven of Nine) and add her to Voyager's crew. Following their encounter with the Borg, the Voyager crew made contact with many other new species, civilizations and cultures, and through the adaptation of previously unknown technologies were finally able to return to Earth in 2377, seven years after the ship had first gone missing.
