Rizla Invisible Players

About Me

Following a storming first two years, the Rizla Invisible Players are back, with an even bigger line-up and party plans.
The tour has gone from strength to strength picking up fans, accolades and many memorable moments along the way and 2009 promises to continue in the same vein with new line-up, arena and party locations. The headline party hosts, The Invisible Players, feature a new look line-up of creative icons: Jazzie B, Jon Carter, Micachu, Gruff Rhys and David Shrigley.
Each with a watertight reputation for creativity and expression through music, the 2009 collective promises to take the Rizla tour to a whole new level.
Playing from a unique musical van, a recreation of the original Rizla touring van of the 1920’s, The Invisible Players will play spontaneous and inspiring sets from a diverse record collection. There are no prepared set lists, just pure improvisation and the creation of a unique vibe in the Rizla Arena. The sound could vary from Dub, Electrofunk, Balearic, Hip Hop, Breakbeat to Northern Soul and Acid House — the roots of popular music as we know it.
The 2009 tour kicks off with two Rizla Invisible Players club nights in Bristol (Start The Bus, Friday 29th May) and Manchester (The Deaf Institute, Saturday 6th June) before heading up to Rockness for the first festival on the 12-14th June. Lovebox (18-19th July), The Big Chill (7-9th August) and Bestival (11-13th September) complete the festivals. Three more club nights are planned for September to November with a big closing party already being planned. Details to be announced later in the year.

Jon Carter's rise to prominence was triggered, like so many of his generation, by the Acid House revolution of 88-89 when the warehouse parties that happened nationwide suddenly made music so much more accessible than ever before. The breakthrough came in 1994 with a dub coloured 4/4 track 'The Dollar', Jon's first disc outing on the then still embryonic Wall Of Sound label. A subsequent move to Heavenly was marked by the release of 'Blow The Whole Joint Up' under the name Monkey Mafia, one of the defining tunes of the era and still a club favourite five years later.Alongside Norman Cook, the Chemical Brothers and Andy Weatherall, Jon was one of the original residents at the then mind-blowing and now legendary Heavenly Social.Remix wise, Jon has worked with some of music's biggest names, from right across the musical spectrum; U2, Manic Street Preachers and the Prodigy (with whom Jon toured as a DJ) 808 State and Felix Da Housecat.Internationally, it's probably now easier to list the countries Jon hasn't played but undoubted highlights have been a millennium eve gig on Sydney's Bondai Beach and Jon's participation in Brazil's largest carnival in Salvador. His new project ‘Roosevelt High’ has started blowing up parties such as infamous ‘Block at the Lock’ held at The Lock Tavern in Camden, London.

21-year-old Mica Levi is the unassuming five foot one figure leading the future-pop frontier. Over the past year Micachu, as she's become known, has released an avidly received mixtape that moulded concrete grime and ruff-neck hip hop to avant-electronics, composed a Nuevo-classical epic for the London Philharmonic Orchestra as part of a project curated by Marc Anthony Turnage, and formed a band, Micachu andThe Shapes.Mica’s steadily risen as one of the UK’s most talked-about acts, born in Guildford and raised in Watford, Mica Levi couldn’t have had much more of a musical upbringing being the daughter of a record collector and a professional Cellist, she was playing a violin when she was barely old enough to hold one.Her creative armistice lasted to her early teens when she discovered the school’s music tech suites. Delving deep into the murky world of samplers and sequencers Mica began honing her craft.Hooking up with one of Britain’s most acclaimed and experienced electronic artistes, Matthew Herbert, who shared a very similar creative direction in music production, she has gone from strength to strength. Her debut album “Jewellery’ was released on Rough Trade Records in March this year.
