My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Author Joy Zarembka and her brother, Tommy Zarembka (featured on the front of cover of the book), look strikingly similar but were labeled totally two different races at birth. Joy's birthing document states that she is "black" while Tommy's states that he is "white." How do these and other racial classifications effect the lives of mixed race people?

By combining vivid anecdotes of her travels, historical context, and oral histories from mixed-race families, Joy Zarembka examines the notion of race in order to explore the vastly different interpretations of racial identity in various parts of the world in her new book, "The Pigment of Your Imagination: Mixed Race in a Global Society."

NEW BOOK ON RACE

Where does black end and white begin?
Does race exist?
Does racism?

The Pigment of Your Imagination explores the lives of people of mixed race heritage to expose the true meaning of what it is like to be both “black” and “white” in a race-conscious world.

Each country operates within its own racial twilight zone. Throughout the world, people use arbitrary notions of race to define who is “black” and who is “white” but for people of mixed heritage, the racial lines become blurred. Joy Zarembka interviewed families with one black parent and one white parent in various geographical locations to explore the concept of race worldwide and juxtaposed it against the American experience. The poignant results are captured in The Pigment of Your Imagination, which rips the lid off of polite conversation on interracial relationships, racism, and the idea of being of more than one “race.”

This book is designed to make the reader question the myopic perception of race. How do you explain the meaning of black and white to someone who is blind, in essence, indisputably colorblind? Where does white end and black begin? Does society or the individual determine racial classification?
