About Me

I was born in Illinois, and still reside in the Midwest. I grew up reading Stephen King, Ann Rice, and Edgar Allen Poe. All of them have influenced me in their own way but my true influences came from movies and comics. I found a true love of horror/ humor and spinning a tale thanks in part to the likes of George Romeo (Night of the Living Dead), Kevin Smith (Chasing Amy, Dogma) Garth Ennis (Preacher, Punisher comics.)I have become a fan of Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hells Angels) and Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Haunted.) All three of these men a gritty way of telling a story the way I think it should be told.
It may come as a surprise but I didn’t always want to be a writer. As long as I can remember I wanted to be a tattoo artist, due to my love for drawing. I loved that my art would be on someone forever. I would get my chance to be a tattoo artist just after I turned 18. This ultimately ended in loosing interest.
I later got very into reading comics and the idea of drawing them became just as appealing as doing tattoos. I worked up several drawing to go along with a few story ideas I had bouncing around in my head. The problem came when I was told that stories I wrote were not on the same level of drawing I could produce. Strangely enough almost everyone around me thought that I might want to focus on writing and I agreed.
I ended up doing about every minimum wage job in town to make ends meet before my daughter was born and I returned to school and after a year of the Vincennes University journalism program I changed my path to English and focused on my writing.
Since then I have written everything from comics (that never saw the light of day), a couple short film scripts, and now I have turned my attention to short fiction. I would eventually like to write comics and maybe even a movie or two. For now however my focus is on getting everything published that I can and collecting them into a book of short stories. I find that the short story is a lost art and a very important step before tackling a novel.
I am currently working on Vincennes University’s online magazine www.vu1801.com and the final draft of the next Jackson Reed story as well a several other stories. One of which is for a collection in the works that is based on the Vincennes University campus with a supernatural twist, called: Vampire University.
