Hope Fails You

About Me

Sprouting from the ever-growing hardcore and post-hardcore scene that is the Scranton area in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Hope Fails You has accomplished more in just one year than many aspiring metal bands ever achieve. In lieu of an incomprehensible smash mouth-metal sound, Hope Fails You takes metal and blends it with its own version of experimental melody.
Their live performance, however, is what has ultimately been the driving force of the band’s early success. They beat out more than a dozen other bands over the course of three weeks to win the 2008 Burnt Carbon Productions Battle of the Bands, largely due to their high energy set and explosive stage presence that the owner of Burnt Carbon Records describes as something that “…really caught my eye. They weren’t necessarily my style or genre of music coming in, but they sold me pretty quickly. They had my vote to win about two songs in.”
“We pride ourselves on going hard every night, whether there’s five people in the crowd or 500,” the band says. “If we leave the stage after a set and don’t feel like we are going to vomit or have an unbelievable headache, then we feel we have ripped off the crowd.” Playing at locally touted venues such as the Crocodile Rock Café and Café Metropolis, they have opened for nationally recording artists such as Ekotren, Ill Nino, Droid, Otep, A New Revolution, Eyes Set To Kill, Bleed the Sky and After the Burial, with the Ill Nino performance coming in front of over 1,000 people.
The band found their identity in the form of a “HOPE” tattoo on the back of lead singer Jon Needham’s neck. They realized that if you live a life based on hope, it will always lead to failure. You need to want something and strive for it, not just hope for it. From this ideology, the band merges anti-emo messages of becoming someone and never feeling sorry for yourself with a matured metal sound. “I write about hard times and the struggle,” says Needham. “But not just for me. I don’t want people to listen to our music and get depressed over lyrics or feel sorrow. It’s about how everyone can persevere over anything that is thrown at them. My lyrics are to help get past everyday occurrences in life.”
In fact, Hope Fails You is so confident in their new sound that they threw out their first 8-song EP and already have enough new material for a full length. Alan Stout of The Weekender magazine calls the group’s new EP “Upon Our Awakening” a “snarling disc”. “Saying that Hope Fails You is a aggressive unit,” says Stout, “is like saying pit bulls have been known to bite people." With countless influences from opposite poles of the musical world –from Deftones to Mudvayne, Tool to Faith No More, Between the Buried and Me to Slipknot, they create a sound altogether unique and, more importantly, new.
