Box O' Bananas

About Me

The Bananas were born when two musicians alias Jock the Box and Stevie Gillies decided to take on a two piece gig in a pub called "Brennans" in the City of Perth, Scotland. The guys had never went out or played as a two piece outfit before and thus they never had a name for the duo. At the time a chap called Paul Mitchell was managing Brennans and he pushed hard for a name of the band for his poster for the up and coming gigs. The truth was that Paul never recieved a phone call or any suggestions so when the lads appeared on the evening of the gig - the poster said "Appearing tonight, Box O' Bananas". Pauls answer was "Well i needed a band name, so you play the box and he's bananas, Box O' Bananas, there you go." The band introduced a drummer (Big Al) and we went under the name of "The Banana band" for a while. Big Al was desperate to use the name "Ceilidh Minogue" however, Jock, Stevie and Big Al along with another two musicians, Brian McAlpine and Fraser Neill had only just started up another band using that name thus Jock and Stevie decided to stick with Box O' Bananas and Big Al decided to keep the Minogue name for himself.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: http://www.boxobananas.com
Band Members: Today the Bananas play as a duo or a three piece. Jock, Stevie and the resident Banana drummer being Mr Ashley Macmillan. Ashley also plays with Ray Wilson and Stiltskin so when he goes on tour the band have many great deps like Mr Clark Robinson, Mr Duncan Findlay and Mr Mark Wright. We have used many fiddlers over the years but to be honest they generally struggle to keep up with our musical style, arrangements and more to the point - the sheer volume.
Influences: Deep Purple, AC/DC, Jimmy Shand, The Stranglers, The Waterboys, Gregor Lowrey & Black Eyed Biddy.
Sounds Like: Jimmy Shand meets Deep Purple and they have kids - a kind of Jimmy Shandrix Experience.
Record Label: N/A
