In 1994 Mohamed Jabbie left war torn Sierra Leone to make a better life for himself. Mohamed joined his father, step-mother, numerous siblings, an extended family and a large African immigrant community to live and work in Portland. Mohamed’s father, Akim Jabbie, had come to study criminal justice, first earning a bachelor’s degree from Southern Oregon College, and later a master’s degree from the University of Portland. Akim Jabbie remains Mohamed’s staunchest advocate for justice.
Mohamed found work as a transport assistant in the health care field. Even today there are former patients that continue to inquire as to the status of this case seeking justice for their former caregiver.
Mohamed had an extensive web of friends in the community. He played soccer with friends from the African immigrant community. He was active in the mosque in Northeast Portland and attended services there in the hours prior to his death. He is remembered by many as happy, kind and generous friend.
On the evening of September 24th, 2004, Mr. Mohamed Jabbie, age 33, was murdered by gunfire in his apartment at 8800 SE Causey in Clackamas County. His family and friends along with many others have been deeply saddened and pained by this crime and by the lack of justice in this case.
Michael Washington and associates of Mr. Washington are responsible for the murder of Mr. Jabbie. In June of 2005 Michael Spencer Washington Jr. was convicted in Multnomah County Circuit Court of a violent attack on Mr. Jabbie that occurred July 4th, 2004. Mr. Jabbie’s murder occurred the day after he testified in grand jury in Multnomah County.
Mr. Jabbie’s murder has been solved and some of those responsible have been arrested and are pending trial. However, there is still much work to be done. As has become common in gang cases where intimidation and fear are doled out by thugs, one of the challenges for investigators is the lack of cooperation from people that have first hand knowledge of what happened. Frequently they are unwilling to come forward to police. Detectives continue to work on developing the information to bring this entire case to justice. Investigators are confident that there are people in the community that have critical information in this case and are asking for those people to come forward and provide that information.
