About Me

Born in Hampshire, raised in Somerset, I set out on a long and winding road some years back which took me to Sussex, Essex, Leicester, London, Coventry, Swansea, Bristol and finally back to Somerset in 1992. Over the years there's been a lot of jobs, a lot of singing, a lot of writing and a lot of living. There's been a lot of music too. Formed a band ('the Inner Mind') while still at school, playing covers. Following that, my musical history is somewhat chequered, with me providing vocals, acoustic guitar and original songs for various bands including "Hard Times" (1974 to 1985, with a few gaps), "Long Distance" (1985), "More Mileage" (2000 to 2004) and ongoing associations with "No Prima Donnas" (2002 - ), "November Sunrise" (2004 - ) and the Supermodels (2005 - ). More recently I've been focussing on developing my original material and a few covers in an acoustic format and with this in mind I've been working with guitarist James Slater (an awesome singer-songwriter in his own right). We've made a couple of appearances at the Open Door Club in East Harptree and hope to be playing some full gigs later this year. My previous solo recordings: "The Madman" (EP, 2002), "Better Late Than Never" (Album, 2003).With Maire Campbell, I am co-founder of the Open Door Acoustic Club which meets on the third Friday of every month (except August) at the Waldegrave Arms pub in the village of East Harptree, about 12 miles south of Bristol. All ages and abilities are welcome - just contact me if you want more details. The Club comes under the umbrella of PLEASE, a promotional company also formed by Maire and myself. We organise a variety of music and stand-up comedy events in the Chew Valley and beyond. Contact me for more details.

Influences: Where do you start with influences? Many of the great songwriters in pop, folk and rock music. A few artists who have inspired me over the years include Al Stewart, David Ackles, Ray Davies, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Roy Harper, Cat Stevens and the pop songwriting teams of Lennon-McCartney, Marriott-Lane, Holder-Lea, Difford-Tilbrook, the Gibb Brothers and Benny & Bjorn. Currently finding great enjoyment and inspiration from the modern Americana artists - Stacey Earle, Mary Gautier, Jolie Holland, Steve Earle, Lee Ann Womack, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kate Campbell, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash etc. etc. - the list is endless!
