DJ Magal

About Me

When it is about electro, Dj Magal’s name is quickly mentioned. The Award for best DJ in his category given by the readers of the magazine DJ Sound in 2004 consolidated what the dancefloors throughout Brazil and the world have known for a long time. And not only electro takes part in Magal’s vast repertory, but also techno, house, EBM (Electronic Body Music), acid house, synth pop and some other electronic experiments, from minimal to funky. Such versatility in the sound cabin and charisma towards his audience have made Magal one of the most acclaimed and worshipped Brazilian DJs. He has been taking part in the line ups of great festivals and playing in the most important clubs of the country. But everything had a start in the 80s when Magal began his successful history.Pioneer in the Brazilian electronic scene, Magal has gone through different moments in more than 20 years of his professional carrer. While the first auditions were based on Arthur Baker, Bootsy Collins, Quincy Jones, Incredible Bongo Band, Earth Wind & Fire and Parliament, still in the 80s, his musical Influences changed to a more agressive sonority, such as New Order, Section 25, Mantronix, Nitzer Ebb e Cabaret Voltaire. At that time Magal was a member of his brother’s sound crew and soon they took part in Marquinhos MS’s crew, the legendary and memorable DJ that together with Magal formed one of the most bombastic partnership of the underground of Sao Paulo. In 1983, Marquinhos MS became the resident DJ of the club of vanguard Madame Satã, punk, dark, rocker’s ghetto and many other tribes that rocked the nightlife of São Paulo. Soon Magal was invited to join Marquinhos at Madame Satã , that meant his firt professional step as a turntable DJ. New Wave, gothic and pop rock were the hit of that period, but Magal went into more electronic or agressive sonorities. After a while the partners, Magal and Marquinhos, switched to the club Anny 44 and rapidly Magal occupied another resident DJ’s place, the legendary Rose Bom Bom. His repertory encompassed American grooves, from hip hop to house music that soon gave space to EBM and new beat, still taking part in Magal’s repertory today.Magal who is a reference in the clubber culture, has also DJed in other important places. In 1988 he released together with Arthur Veríssimo the acid house at Cais and with Marquinhos at Malícia. Between 1990 and 1992 he played the first EBM and industrial records at the Hoellisch. In 1997, the club Columbia was another one that received Magal several times until Fábio Spavieri became the resident DJ at the renowned I Like Mondays, that brought back the sonority of the 80’s. Then the next step was the project called Cio 80’s by Gláucia++ at the club Stereo, in 2000. Since then Magal has been the resident together with Gláucia and Oscar Bueno in a project that takes place at the club D-Edge, now called only Cio and ventured into the fusion of elements of electro, minimal, synth pop, hi NRG, disco, new wave, electrohouse, techno and house.Magal has been playing at the most important clubs of Brazil and Europe, producing his own tracks and remixing other ones talently and successfully. Mentioned as one of the most influential Djs of the underground scene of Sao Paulo by the journalist Claudia Assef in the book “Todo DJ já Sambou”. Magal has been a reference for many DJs, influenced by his always innovative work.
