Qwire: Adelaide's Gay & Lesbian Choir

Please send all queries to: [email protected]

The first Gay & Lesbian choir in Adelaide was called the S.A. Gay & Lesbian Choir and was started around Feb 1996. We rehearsed in the Beans Bar, the Mars Bar, and the Bowden-Brompton Community Centre. We had several Directors over the next four years or so.

Then the Qwire folded for a couple of years until ‘Red’ came along from Canberra G&L Choir and started us up again. We rehearsed in Darling House for years until we negotiated to meet in the current hall.

The Adelaide Gay and Lesbian Qwire is a small, but dynamic, group of singers dedicated to producing sounds that any community can enjoy.

This group, in it's evolution has been restructured a number of times, always finding its feet and moving forward to entice and entertain the Adelaide Public. We have just taken on a new director, 'Angela,' and are looking forward to her leadership and energy during the coming year.

So what makes potential interested singers hesitate to join us?

"They probably sing a lot of church music."Wrong!- The music choices are diverse and we all put in suggestions especially when we are preparing for a performance.

"They probably audition you in front of a panel."Wrong!- Come along and listen any Tuesday night, make a cup of tea, and see what you think... no pressure...and NO audition!

"The rehearsal venue is inconvenient to get to."Wrong!- How about walking distance from the Capri Cinema at Goodwood; buses stopping out the front; the Goodwood Tram just beyond; plenty of parking, and located in a gay-friendly Church Hall.

"I'm the wrong age for choir groups."
Wrong!- We have all ages- we all get along, helping each other and learning from each other, in a supportive circle.

"I bet everyone reads music."
Wrong! Some can, some memorise, others listen and join in... no problem.

"Do they perform in Adelaide?"
Yes!!! We are looking at some low-key performances throughout the year, at various venues, and during Feast, you can choose which ones you feel comfortable to participate in.

We also have social get-togethers and celebrations each term with BBQs, Karaoke, Movie Nights, Mid-Year Xmas Dinner, and we have at least one Talent Night each year with visits from Dame Edna and Shirley Bassey!

What can be absolutely guaranteed is a laugh, the reward of making a good sound, and the camaraderie that is just around the corner!

We always welcome new choir members, no matter what your sexuality, so please get in touch for more information.
