I am the third largest island in the Mediterranean. i have a lot of people vist me, with an average of 2.4 million tourists per year.i am a former British colony, and gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. then my people make me became a Commonwealth republic in 1961. i am known as the republic od cyprus and have been a member state of the European Union since 1 May 2004. my name comes from the Mediterranean cypress treei am the legendary birthplace of the goddess of beauty and love, the beautiful Aphrodite. she emerged fully grown from the sea where the severed genitals of the god Uranus were cast by his son, Kronos, causing my sea to foam (Greek: Aphros).
