About Me

Jeff Rosenberg, Willamette Week, calls PDX songwriter Alan Kanning "fearsomely talented." Kanning describes his own work as "short stories with an acoustic guitar soundtrack."Kanning was born in Shelby, Montana into either a farm family that played music, or a family of musicians that farmed. He states that he is still unsure which to this day. He recalls: "Honestly, my first clear memory is listening to Glen Campbell singing Wichita Lineman on my parents' coffin-sized console stereo while strumming a toy guitar my mom had made me from a Pampers box, a marker and some string. I spent much of my early life farming , playing music and kicking around my home town." After graduating from high school Alan essentially left all three behind. In his mid-twenties his Dad came to visit him: "Over the weekend he talked about his life. Just as he pulled away my first song came to me. They still come to this day... so I write them down." I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4
