About Me

Look out for Rogue Sound, Smack Thompson and Golan performing around the Boulder/Denver area!
Otis Lande was born in Oakland, California, and raised in Boulder, Colorado. He played classical piano from an early age (7), and performed in statewide competitions for several years. At age 13 he picked up a 4-string Fender Jazz Bass, and never looked back. His primary influences have been Bass gurus Les Claypool of Primus and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also, Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, John-Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, Mike Gordon, Jack Bruce, Phil Lesh, Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Rufus Reed, and many others have been inspirational. In Spring 2007 he graduated California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles with a BFA in Jazz Bass Performance. While at CalArts he also had the benefit of studying with legendary bassist Alphonso Johnson, of Weather Report fame.
Otis' father, Art Lande, is a noted Jazz pianist/drummer and composer who was influential in the Bay Area in the 70's with his band Rubisa Patrol. He is also known by his work with ECM Records. Art still resides in Boulder, but tours all over the US and Europe with amazing performers like Paul McCandless, Nguyen Le, Fred Hersch, Bruce Williamson, and many more. Check out Art Lande for more info.
As a bassist, Otis has played with Boulder's own Rose Hill Drive. Other frequent collaborators include Art Lande, Ryan Madson, Daniel Lucio and Trevor Hill. He enjoys playing in many styles: jazz, rock, funk, brazilian, afro-cuban, reggae, free improvisation, psychadelic rock, bluegrass, etc..
Special Thanks to: Rory Cowal (piano), Trevor Anderies (Drums), Jon Armstrong (Tenor Sax), and Javier Gonzalez (Trumpet) for playing on "Ambergris" and "Strands". Also, thanks to Trevor Hill (Keyboards) and again Trevor Anderies (Drums) for the playing on "Red Chair". Thanks to the Arranging 2007 class for help on "Talisman"!
