About Me

My name is Matt Hults, and you're probably thinking, Who the hell is he?I am a horror writer and artist currently disguised as a stay-at-home dad in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I'm a product of the 70s and 80s, having grown up with such safety hazards as solid-steel floor fans that could mulch a No.2 pencil and mircowave ovens that worked with the door open. I'm the kind of person who usually gets told, "Aren't you too old for that?" The kind of guy who builds pillow forts with my kids using every couch cushion, blanket, and mattress we own. As a boy I had epic adventures in the backyard and built haunted houses in the basement. I believed winning the lottery meant being the one who got to keep the box after the neighbors bought a new refrigerator.I've had my share of broken hearts and personal struggle, and from it I've found that my interest in the horror genre has more to do with a hope for survival than a fascination with death. So that's me. Maybe you're the same? Maybe you'd be interested in what interests me, like remembering the monsters of your childhood, and thriving on mysteries, adventure, and exploring the unknown. If you are, maybe you'd like my new novel SKINWALKER.You can click the banner to the left to go to my web site and check out some sample chapters.I hope everyone drops by and takes a look.Just to set the record straight, this is NOT a werewolf novel. Recent movies and television series have seen fit to group the Skinwalker legend with that of lycanthropes, but that's not really the case. Skinwalkers originated as part of American Indian mythology, particularly in the Navajo and Mohegan tribes. Typically referred to as witches, they are humans that wear the skins of animals to change into that animal and gain its abilities. The most common skins are that of a coyote or a wolf, which is no doubt the reason these creatures have been associated with werebeasts. You can find info about them all over the web these days, but when I wrote the story back in 99-2000 there was scarcely any info about them outside of Tony Hillerman's novel. But this is not the retelling of a legend. This is a story about how your everyday worries don't amount to squat when you've got a blade pressing against your jugular or a shotgun pointed at your face. This is about a teenage girl who is still struggling to discover what she holds most important, and about the boy who is willing to risk everything to let her know that he loves her. It's about a police detective whose faith has never been tested until she finds herself trying to stop a killer that mimics the atrocities of a madman, and about the investigator whose secrets run deeper than his scars. It's about trusting someone in the face of betrayal, and finding courage amongst a blood-soaked whirlwind of chaos.I hope you enjoy it!-Matt
