Black Friday

About Me

Black Friday was originally started as a tribute to Steely Dan by Bill Spurlock and some friends in 2002, and has progressively grown and changed to become a collaboration of twelve talented musicians from around the country. Schooled in rock, jazz, funk and different vocal techniques (as used by some of our influences listed ), we were taught the importance of learning and understanding more than just the basic triad chords. The famous “mu” chord of Steely Dan has been a teaching tool for many outstanding music schools and instructors for years, and we as a group are dedicated to performing Donald Fagen and Walter Becker’s music with the same intergrity as the original recordings, with the hopes a new generation of musicians will learn and use complex chord voicing and vocal harmony. We also enjoy entertaining baby-boomers with the music they grew up on and introducing young people to a whole new level of music. Our band members, with over 325 years of combined professional stage, television and radio experience, pride ourselves on bringing you, our listening audience, the most authentic and incredible Steely Dan music you'll ever enjoy!Recent venues played include The Continental Club, The Concert Pub, The Hideaway, Shanahan's, Ruggle's Bar and Grill (guests of The Mark Dini Group), and Sam's Boat.
"Absolutely one of the best bands I have ever heard in Houston!" - Bob Ruggiero, music and club reviews for the Houston Press
"Black Friday's attention to detail and dedication to precision sound is impressive. Rarely have real artists been associated with cover bands, but this group is embracing the challenging and demanding role with charisma and flair. Never being one to say "this is a must see band", this IS a must see band." - Dale Armet, President, The Montgomery County Blues Society
"Black Friday is the best tribute to Steely Dan I have ever heard. If you like Steely Dan, you must see this band!" - Mike Durbin, The Moe Hansum Band
"Our bar was packed the night they played. It was our biggest night in years." - Shanahan's Bar and Grill
