The band would have been playing the Hadfield every night were it not for Matt and his van! What a great time - we were all on the dole and just playing songs we loved. V and Avida Dollars rehearsed in Neptune aswell, and The Yorkshire Grey wasn't a guys' bar...it was our office. The Hallamshire was a great gig - we even had a little changing room, god that was fucking cool! Martin Bedford used to put on Loft shows up there with great Sheffield bands. We turned up for one gig and he had decorated the whole room with naked dolls he'd scoured charity shops for, and hung them up by nooses - going slightly oblique with the baby theme. All gone now, and turned into a fucking wine bar like all the others on West Street. We used to poster the Hole in The Road for every gig - running round town with a bucket of wallpaper paste and a handful of posters we'd photocopied at the post office. There are still a few smile baby stickers stuck to traffic lights somewhere!
Influences: The bands around at that time were hardcore dirty guitar bands - grunge was kicking off and shoegazing was still around. My Bloody Valentine - what a noise, big, dirty wall of sound - awesome. PJHarvey had just started out - blew us all away at the Foundry. Spiritualized, Cocteaus, Slowdive - all amazing live, and what brilliant recordings, still sounding magic today. Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Oasis, Belly, Breeders, Pixies, Pulp....... I remember Mark Eyre (from V RIP) coming round on his cool new Lambretta, jumping off his moped and running in the house to the record player off his head about this new band - it was Happy When it Rains by Garbage, jesus, what a sound! REM, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Velvet Underground, Mazzy Star - beautiful, so many more my head is spinning...
