From The Underground Up is a work-in-progress film, that captures the independent spirit and artistic determination put forth by Hip-Hop artists who are not afraid to be innovative and creative in an effort to liberate their craft from an indifferent, bottom-line oriented music industry.
From the day-to-day grind of pushing their own CDs on the streets to performing live shows and recording sessions; it is an intimate and honest portrayal of independent artists struggling to find an audience and make living for themselves.
It’s their commentary on what Hip-Hop was in its beginnings and how it has morphed into a billion-dollar, international phenomenon that is severely disconnected from any sort of positive message regarding Black Culture—also, as a business that doesn’t consider them worthy of exposure because they won’t sell out and rap about what they tell them to rap about. Things must change and the streets are ready; the underground must come up!
The project, so far, features appearances by: Mike G. and D.J. Sammy B (of Jungle Brothers), Bobbito Garcia, DJ Red Alert, Wendy Day, Percee P, The Beatnuts, Roc Raida, Lord Sear, Sensational, Kev Hutch, Creature, No Games Involved, SUBCON, Unknown, Dalek, Thirstin Howl III, and many more.
