....."8 CORDAS" (8 Strings) duo combines the talents of Fernando Caneca (acoustic guitar) and Cacala Carvalho (vocals), two very well known Rio de Janeiro musicians with a long and stellar resume. Their repertoire focuses on sambas authored by some of Brazilian music's greats, such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque and Djavan - with some Bossa Nova classics thrown in for good measure.............................................CANECA is a staple of the MPB scene, having played live and in the studio with artists like Ivan Lins, Marisa Monte, Cesária Évora, Emilio Santiago, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Moraes Moreira, Zélia Duncan and Vanessa da Mata. His experience as a sought-after sideman led Caneca to his first CD, released in 2004. It was a tribute to the great folk composer Canhoto da ParaÃba, who's also a legendary left-handed acoustic guitar player. Versatile and fluent in samba, choro and bossa as well as rock and roll, Caneca maintains a hectic schedule, playing alongside Arthur Maia and Paula Morelenbaum as well as Cesinha and Fernando Nunes, as part of the instrumental trio Flenks......................................................
...................................CACALA CARVALHO sang with widely popular vocal group Maite-tchu throughout the eighties and nineties, before releasing her MPB and rock-tinged debut solo CD, "Ela e ele e eu", in 2001. The CD was produced by her partner Fernando Caneca. In that same year, Cacala was invited to join the famous vocal samba group ARRANCO DE VARSOVIA (see www.myspace.com/arrancodevarsovia) in time for their third album "Na cadência do samba" (Dubas Records). Since 2005, Cacala also sings beside the great singers Eliane Tassis and Marianna Leporace in the vocal group FOLIA DE 3. Their first album, Pessoa Rara (Mills Records and Mosaico Digital), was dedicated to the famous brazilian composer Ivan Lins (see www.myspace.com/foliade3). Now Cacala performs beside Fernando Caneca in the duo 8 CORDAS. They are readying their first CD, with their own and unique take on several MPB classics and lesser-known gems. "We want to explore the possibilities offered by these two wonderful, versatile instruments", says Cacala, referring, of course, to her voice and Caneca´s guitar.
