MLY

About Me

MLY is a striking Dutch fashion label. Founder Emily Hermans, who started her own label immediately after graduating the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, is known for her self-developed knit work.Remarkable about the “Knit Couture” by MLY is that it is developed and produced locally and in-house. In stead of buying ready-made fabrics, Hermans designs her own. Production isn’t delegated halfway across the world either, but done at a knitting facility in the vicinity of Eindhoven, where MLY is located. This is how MLY has complete control of the production process from A to Z.Although MLY’s collections differ in design and inspiration sources, a clear line can be discovered. Especially the rhythmic, repetitive designs and graphic patterns give the label its own distinctive signature. The SS 07 collection “Misfits”, which is in the stores now, is seen as MLY’s breakthrough in The Netherlands. The following AW 07/08 collection “Rhythm of Life”, presented in January during the Amsterdam Fashion Week, was received with much enthusiasm by press and retailers.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Made in Someland; Concept.Made in China, made in Holland, made in Italy…What does it really tell us about a product’s origin? Is a car or a toy or a shirt ‘made in China’, just because that’s the country where it left the factory? With these ‘Made in…’ tags, we ignore that there’s an entire process before physical production. Raw materials can come from anywhere in the world. Especially the most important raw materials: ideas and inspiration. For Made in Someland, MLY got her inspiration from the Far East, yarns from Spain, buttons from Eastern Europe... And the collection is produced in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. MLY not only gets her inspiration from distant places, but also from distant times. In this case, the late 19th, early 20th century. The time women began to travel, began to play sports, began to wear trousers. The time we first saw the phenomenon of travel as a lifestyle rather than just a necessity. The time of the introduction of both wearable and fashionable travel wear. The time many artists and designers started travelling for the purpose of inspiration, and started to use different cultural elements in their work. For Made in Someland, MLY used modern, ecologically friendly textiles, such as bamboo yarns, while avant-gardistic silhouettes reflect the 19th century travel component which inspired the collection. Far Eastern influences are clearly visible in the ethnic, Asian designs and patterns, while the presentation of the collection has a typical Dutch setting, with Eindhoven skylines, Dutch heath lands and industrial landscapes.
