Made in Someland; Concept.Made in China, made in Holland, made in Italy…What does it really tell us about a product’s origin? Is a car or a toy or a shirt ‘made in China’, just because that’s the country where it left the factory? With these ‘Made in…’ tags, we ignore that there’s an entire process before physical production. Raw materials can come from anywhere in the world. Especially the most important raw materials: ideas and inspiration. For Made in Someland, MLY got her inspiration from the Far East, yarns from Spain, buttons from Eastern Europe... And the collection is produced in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. MLY not only gets her inspiration from distant places, but also from distant times. In this case, the late 19th, early 20th century. The time women began to travel, began to play sports, began to wear trousers. The time we first saw the phenomenon of travel as a lifestyle rather than just a necessity. The time of the introduction of both wearable and fashionable travel wear. The time many artists and designers started travelling for the purpose of inspiration, and started to use different cultural elements in their work. For Made in Someland, MLY used modern, ecologically friendly textiles, such as bamboo yarns, while avant-gardistic silhouettes reflect the 19th century travel component which inspired the collection. Far Eastern influences are clearly visible in the ethnic, Asian designs and patterns, while the presentation of the collection has a typical Dutch setting, with Eindhoven skylines, Dutch heath lands and industrial landscapes.
