Of The Above None

About Me

I am a Kangaroo Valley farmer and teacher and have announced my candidacy for the seat of Gilmore at the next Federal election by taking the unusual step of changing my name by deed poll.My new name may seem a little silly at first but it also contains a clear message. My name is now officially Of The Above None but of course, surname first, it will appear on the ballot paper as NONE, Of The Above thereby giving voters a real choice; either more of the same from the major parties or someone who is prepared to consider every idea on its merits, tell it like it is and is beholden to no one.I have been prompted to stand because I believe this election is the most important ever held in Australia. This election will decide the future direction of our response to the challenge of global warming. In particular it will determine whether or not Australia embarks on the nuclear path. This is of special concern for the people of Gilmore since Jervis Bay is almost certain to be one of the 25 sites chosen for a nuclear reactor if the Government is re-elected.On so many issues this Government has been proven to be slow off the mark or just plain wrong- climate change, the war on Iraq and the abandonment of David Hicks to name a few.In the past, when our resources were considered essentially disposable, Governments could get away with short-term, populist policies and promises but we now know this approach has come at a long-term cost.I believe there is a need in the Federal Parliament for some clear-headed, forthright Independents who are not prisoners of the party system and who are prepared to take a stand for the long term future of this great country.
