Performing at the Orange Peel with Afromotive. Live in-store appearance at Horizon Records/Bohemian cafe in Greenville, SC.
Performing Sting's "Shadows in the Rain" live with The Boomers (with Pat Marafiote, Dom Yorfino, Shawn Levin):
Currently drummer for The Afromotive, Oso Rey and The Soulgrass Rebellion, Marsellus Blues Co., Ian Thomas, Scott Stewart and The Analog Revival, and Christopher O'Neill. Also perform on occasion with Jay Storm.
"No More Waiting" and "Always" are old melodic rock songs rescued from a degrading analog tape, so they're a little noisy, especially around 6k, and drop out a tad here and there, etc., but we had a great feel and vibe on them, so I put them up for old times' sake. The songs feature Tom Walsh and Steve Chams (both now in DOA2k) on guitar and keys respectively (plus background vocals), and David Lindland (singer for Raine and now Solar Sunday) on lead and background vocals, and Gerry Tyler (Matthew 24) on bass, and me on drums and background vocals. The songs were written by Chams. The band was originally called Hearsay, then later changed its name to Crystal Pistol...
In addition, you can hear some contemporary jazz stuff I played on for Rich Martel, jazz guitarist's CD "Opening Doors." Full Throttle, according to my sources, hit 2 on the San Francisco jazz charts for a short while, and was played extensively in NY on cool jazz stations.
"Love the One You're With" is a Greg Sherrod Band adaptation of the CSNY song. We recorded live in the studio in one take. The guitar solo was then dubbed by Peter Blossom, the amazing guitarist in the band. The band members are same as listed below for "Watching and Waiting."
"Big Country" was fun because I used a combo of live drums, triggers, and samples, and did it all together in one take with no overdubs, sequencers, or loops.
"Watching and Waiting" is a cut from singer Greg Sherrod's upcoming album due to be released this year. It features great players such Kris Jensen on sax, Tim "T-Bone" Stone on Hammond B3, Peter Blossom on guitar, and Jay Gerbino on bass.
Frank Sambiase on choosing Brian as his drummer: "Drums. No debate. Kenny (You can call him Elvis) Jones. Unconditionally the best. Unfortunately, Kenny was taken from us three weeks before rehearsal started. God rest his soul. So, where do we go from here. One of Kenny’s favorite drummers. Young, exuberant, ambitious, Brian Jones. Who else?????"
I spent two years at Berklee College of Music studying percussion performance, music production and engineering, and arranging, before being yanked out on the road with an original pop/funk band. I play drums, most recently in the original alt rock band Supple, led by one of the most creative singer/musicians I know, Rob McCulloch, out of NYC. http://www.supple.com. The band became quite well-known for the dark, mysterious cover of "Stayin' Alive," (see video below) with a cello playing the main riff, congas for groove, and Rob broodingly and breathily singing an octave or two below the Bee Gees' original register. The song was used in two movie soundtracks: Clubland, a movie about musicians struggling to make it in the LA music scene, produced by Glen Ballard (Alanis, Dave Matthews, etc.), and "Hurricane Streets" directed by Morgan J. Freeman, and it was a triple winner at the Sundance Film Festival.
I've had the pleasure of also working with many great artists and people in music over the years: Richard Martel, guitarist/composer/producer, Bob Falcone (keyboardist), Adam Lippman (solo artist and rocking bassist for Supple), Denny Blake (lead guitarist on tour with Billy Joel's Movin' Out), bassist Steve Clarke (a monster), producer/engineers Elliott Scheiner (Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, and too many others to list), and Richard Oliver (Rolling Stones, Hall & Oates), Blues legend and vocalist Howard Eldridge (Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Blues Bros), Hilton Valentine (original guitarist for The Animals -- when he first played that classic lick from "House of the Rising Sun" in rehearsal, I got chills), guitarist/producer Mark Hermann (Five For Fighting, Fireants), bassist Eric Massimino (Todd Wolfe, Five For Fighting, FireAnts, "Love, Janis" show in NYC), keyboardist Bob Mayo (Peter Frampton), keyboardist Pat Marafiote, sax player Kris Jensen (Dickey Betts, Allman Bros), Blues'n'soul singer Greg Sherrod (I'll be featured on a track on his upcoming CD release), Rico Monaco (of Rico Monaco and Sons of Sol). I miss collaborating, performing, and writing with Rico. He's incredible, and so is his band!
One of my specialties is being hired cold for gigs and making them groove, even when I don't know the tunes. I learned early on to listen carefully and lock in. I keep the chops down in favor of making the song arrangement and the groove/feel work to the max (Too many musicians forget that the technique should serve the music, not the other way around). I feel my mission on gigs and in the studio is to absolutely inject energy into any song to make it really come alive and move you. This works really well for me in the studio, too, and, thankfully, I get hired for many styles of music, from fusion, jazz, R&B, blues, to balls out rock'n'roll.
I also sing lead and background vocals, play keyboards and guitar, hand percussion, and produce, engineer, write, and arrange. I do professional voiceover work as well. Here's a voiceover sample video:
