Who am I?
My name is Elizabeth, and I graduated from University of California, Riverside. When I was there I found KUCR, one of my favorite places. I switched into the University of Southern California. Thankfully the great people at KUCR are letting me continue to do my show for them. They are a great little station. :)I am very pro-immigrants rights, women's rights, queer rights, anti-racist, etc. I like all kinds of music but for my shows I focus on women's and queer music. I have two formats: Undercurrent is my everyday format, and Girl-Song Primer is the name of my "specials."
Girl-Song Primer
attempts to educate and inform listeners about the history of current and past women's, queer, genderqueer, and feminist music.Undercurrent
is a sampling of current and past independent rock, indie, and whatever else, with an emphasis on fun. Mostly cute girlie twee stuff. The show airs on:
KUCR Radio, 88.3 FM, Fridays11am to 1pm Pacific Time
Stream Live from KUCR.org
Info about contacting me:
If you are interested in co-curating a show, especially for Girl-Song Primer, please feel free to send me a message. I am always looking for new avenues and information. Also, bands can feel free to contact me if they wish to snail-mail or email me some music.Musical styles in Undercurrent generally include:
twee, shoegazer, indie, riot-grrrl, folk, and cute new releasesMusical styles to be explored in Girl-Song Primer include:
rock, indie, blues, hip hop, experimental, electronic, and anything else that strikes my interest and sustains women's and feminist interests. I am aiming to create a show that is racially, ethnically, and stylistically diverse, but united by critiques of gender.FAQs:
Why "girl"? Why not "guy"?
Girl is just shorthand. First, it is not exclusively girls (see below). Second, over the years women have been pushed to the side and oppressed over the years in music scenes, just as in other aspects of daily life. There is a lot of "cock" in rock and other genres. Women have been more able to produce and direct their own music, and reach popularity, but these developments are only sustained because of profound social changes over the past century in terms of viewing gender. Also, these changes have only occured because women and others have spoken out and fought back. This radio show is an attempt to re-write women and gender into music history, and support current artists that come from these backgrounds and are interested in these issues. Can boys be feminists too? Why are there some boys on the show?
To clear up a misconception, the label feminist can be applied to boys, transpeople, or anyone else for that matter. Since I want to include music from artists that are sensitive to gender issues, I will from time to time include boys, men and people of other stripes that seem to pay attention to these issues. Why the gay and lesbian stuff
Gay, Lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues are ultimately issues of gender rules and codes. Although "queer" and "girl" are CERTAINLY not synonymous, both people's sex and people's sexual behaviours are contrained by gender norms. This profile was edited with CustomizeYourSpace Editor
