About Me

Due to the extraordinary circumstances this venue is closed. The 9 Muses' colorful life was (Dec 2005-Dec 2008). Noise complaints filed from two neighbors convinced Portland officials from the "Office of Neighborhood Involvement" to, in fact, choke out 9 Muses Music Venue by restricting its hours of operation. Even after sound proofing the building and having strictly acoustic music, two neighbors seemed to be really vengeful and called police and city officials at the least "pin drop" that they heard -or that they said- came from 9 Muses. Though some complaints in early 2007 were legitimate and the owners had time to correct the problem, some complaints were made even when no events were happening (that is why it is said to be purposeful or vengeful with ulterior motives). Jefferey Larsen, owner of the business: Sonic Recollections -a vinyl record store- two doors down from the 9 Muses' building and Janet Newcomb, owner of the Apt/condo complex on SE 27th Avenue directly behind 9 Muses' old building, led city officials to believe (and almost coercing Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement at the hearing) that 9 Muses Tavern was a nuisance with it's music program. "What else can we file about this", was uttered from Janet Newcomb to the official from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement as the hearings officer proposed closing 9 Muses at 9 PM (meaning what else could they do to shut the business down). Janet Newcomb did not even live in the building directly behind 9 Muses and most of her tenants there at the Apartment building liked having the 9 Muses next to them after the initial problem was fixed. Paper work submitted to city record confirmed that Miss Newcombs' sister blamed the 9 Muses for not being able to sale her condos directly behind 9 Muses' building -sighting "having a tavern beside them was a deterrent for potential buyers", however it is known that inner city condo/apartment customers actually move to the city because they like businesses such as 9 Muses Music venue. The city of Portland forced 9 Muses to close at 9PM for being framed as a "nuisance". Loss of hours for its music program, especially during the tough economic times of 2008 proved to be a lethal combination. The report is public property and on record at city offices in Portland, OR.
