MAMADY KEITA TALK
Saturday July 25th / John Field Room, National Concert Hall / 11am-12.30pm / €10
Mamady Keita, the legendary djembe player, is visiting Ireland for the first time since his 1967 visit with Ballet de Guinea. In this lively session he will play a piece, discuss the djembe, and share some of his unparalled knowledge of West African rhythms. He will open the floor to questions, with his wife and accompanist Monette acting as translator.

In 2009, his 50th year as a musician, legendary djembe player Mamady Keita is giving two workshops in Europe. Learn & Explore and the Big Bang Festival are proud to welcome him to The National Concert Hall for one of them. Djembe players won’t want to miss the opportunity to learn about West African rhythms from a virtuoso and gifted teacher. They are invited to bring their instruments to this hands-on session. (Participants who need to borrow instruments should contact the Big Bang Festival at [email protected] .) Observer tickets (€5) are also available for those would like to come along to watch and listen, without taking part. Among Mamady’s accompanists will be his wife Monette, who will translate for him as he shares his 50 years of musical genius
SERGIO KRAKOWSKI PANDEIRO WORKSHOP

Once off opportunity to partake in a workshop with internationally acclaimed virtuso Sergio Krakowski. In this workshop, Sergio will focus on the Pandeiro and introduce various basic Afro-Brazilian rhythms. More elaborate versions of essential Brazilian rhythms will be presented as well as non-Brazilian rhythms such as 6/8 ,12/8 shuffle and funk patterns. Odd-time rhythms will also be covered.
