About Me

.. New clips on Youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj-x9ygQEGA
I'm a pianist based in Brisbane, Australia. I don't like to put myself in a box (and therefore leave myself open to criticism from various Genre Police out there) but I like to/can/do play a variety of styles including blues, jazz, pop, third-stream and experimental, whatever that means.
My iPod contains a seemingly random and unrelated selection of music from C.W. Stoneking to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Keith Jarrett to Radiohead and everything in between. I get bored easily. I make incredible double chocolate brownies. I spend my life surrounded by boys ranging in age from 3 to 53 (for various different reasons) and I much prefer it that way, although to compensate for this I have more jewellery than most people have hot dinners. Some would argue that I have an addiction to op shops.
I have a few interesting musical projects coming up including;
* writing for and performing in a children's jazz and blues cabaret show (www.whoatilly.com)
* performing in contemporary chamber ensemble/funk band The Trickster Project (featuring music written by Thomas Green)
* performances and recordings with Cloudfarmers - a re-interpretation ensemble (with vocalist Kylie Southwell and bassist Craig Kickbush) in which we play interesting reinventions of songs we love
* the recording of a DVD with Sympatico - a new music ensemble featuring renowned Brisbane trumpeter Clint Allen and percussionist Dave Kemp
* being the pianist/keyboardist in the Frank Zappa Big Band (which features the talents of many well-known Brisbane musicians) which will perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club in January (more details to come)
I will post notices about gigs as they draw nearer.
Have a rad day.

A bit about the songs...
High and Dry and Black Hole Sun are demos of tracks recorded by The Cloudfarmers - a newly named group comprising Kylie Southwell (vocals), Craig Kickbush (bass and vocals) and myself. Gig notices soon but in the meantime we'd love some honest, constructive feedback. More about this group in the 'blog' section. We do have a few more tracks recorded so if you'd like to hear more please contact me.
Cusp is from an EP recorded by composer Thomas Green at The Green Room (www.thomasgreenmusic.com) and performed by The Trickster Project. The full EP contains a three-movement suite of which Cusp is the third. This is merely an extract as I wanted to minimise the decrease in sound quality. If you want to hear more, contact Tom and he can organise you a copy.
Wang Dang Doodle, Gotta Know How and Celebrate The Curves are from two shows I did at the Stonnington Jazz Festival (with Lil' Fi, Margret Roadknight and Mary-Jane Carpenter in May 20088) in which we paid homage to the early blues ladies - hence the traditional sound of the songs. The best bits of the show have been hand-picked and lovingly molded into the album 'A Tribute To The Blues Mamas' which is now available for download from www.liveband.com.au (you can also download all the cover and label art - like the picture of Margret and Lil' Fi that appear when the song come up on my MySpace) or in hard copy from www.lilfi.com
Cheers,
- K. x
