Cristian Cárdenas [Plug] is a digital artist, music producer and graphic designer. Under the pseudonym of Plug he has developed a prolific career which includes diverse areas of digital art: design, video, animation and sound manipulation.He has been active since 2000 as DJ, producer and graphical designer. Since then he has been collaborating with collectives and art groups in Mexico like noiselab, Konfort, XNOgrafikz, Abolipop and Filtro (his own organization and Netlabel focused in the promotion of digital art).As musician, he has played live in Mexico at he most important festivals of independent electronic music, like MUTEK, Interface, Transitio MX,etc. Plug had also a series of live presentations at India an Japan.As graphic designer he has developed and worked the image of several groups and organizations inside the electronic music scene, generating sites, and packing of CDs, and designing and mixing visuals in real time for music events.He coordinated and produced with other sonorous artists and poets a project that merged underground electronic music with poetry, inspired in Mexico City.He developed FILTRO (www.filtro.com.mx), a pioneering project of distribution of music through the net (Netlabel), which has been of great success and has already distributed more than 400,000 mp3s .
THE MUSIC
Plug is without doubt one of the most respected and well known names inside the Mexican independent electronic scene. His relationship with active groups and collectives of intelligent electronic music from Mexico as well as his unmistakable sound has helped this young musician to forge a solid career that includes constant live presentations.As a new electronic music enthusiast, his influences range from IDM, glitches and clicks and cuts to minimal techno, from dub to synthetic ambient and include disco music and funk (this may explain part of the feeling in his productions and his live act).He has been fusing all of his influences to create his own sound, a fresh and unique mixture of microscopic textures, ambiences and syncopated rhythms that can be labeled as “minimal techno” without any compromise with previously existing styles. In fact, he defines his work as “an application of the aesthetics of techno to other styles, be it minimal house (like in his first EP), dub (like in Cesped, his album in progress) or even disco and funk”. His live act capably demonstrates these applications and has shown a strong impact on those who have had the opportunity of seeing him playing live. His innovative sound has opened him the doors of music festivals, art galleries, cultural spaces and parties.His very own assembly of cadences makes his music friendly to IDM, house, techno and dub fans, and has given to minimal dancefloor music new colors and a playful feeling. Plug’s music invites you to a deep listening and to movement as well.His live act takes us from nostalgic, almost childish moods to strong funky techno moments as well as dubby house instants. Like a videogame dislocated logic, you don’t know what to expect even if you feel you are still playing the same game.His first EP released at Filtro, his own label, shows his interest to realize, through the experimentation -and microscope in hand- a deconstruction of genres that fit perfectly, using the rhythmic foundations of techno, in the dance floor.
