So I am getting ready to student teach this next semester. I had to write a coaaching philosophy as part of my paperwork. So I thought you would all like it. Coaching Philosophy:Athletes are students first. Athletics should supplement a student’s educational experience. Discipline, commitment, hard work, and determination are all requirements to being a good athlete and a good coach. These skills are also very important to being a good student. As a coach it is important to value school and how athletics support it. Personally, I have known many students who would have gone to college if it had not been for athletics. Through a love of a sport these individuals found higher education and opened many doors for themselves. By requiring high educational standards for one’s athletes a coach has the ability to make a difference in their student-athletes’ lives. It is a coach’s duty to the student-athlete to not let them compete if their grades do not meet required standards, even if it hurts the team. Without performance in the classroom, performance on the field doesn’t matter. It is important to remember only three percent of high school athletes go on to college and even less make it to the professional level. With this in mind sports should be a fun, educational experience for students, where they are provided a opportunity to grow and develop.
