The Sellouts

About Me

English:

The Sellouts were the brazilian garage punk pioneers back in the nineties, and the only ones to reach overseas at the time.

Formed in late 1995, the duo developed a very unique and personal way of recording music and unleashing energy that brought them to the attention of north american label Rapid Pulse Records two years later. Rapid Pulse released their first two singles (“Hey Mofo” and “Swingin’Bombs”) in the US at the beginning of 1998. “Hey Mofo” was released first, with the pressing of 300 copies, which sold out quickly and led Rapid Pulse to release a second print of 500 copies with a different artwork and in translucent vinyl.

Swingin’ Bombs followed with the pressing of 500 copies. Five hundred more had to be pressed shortly after, this time with different vinyl and sleeve colors. Both singles are out of print now. They were praised in punk print like MaximumRock'nRoll, Flipside and others around the world, and that led the band to release more vinyl worldwide. Two italian labels (Gonna Puke & Rockin’ Bones) approached the band at the same time, and each of them released one new single (“You Leave Me Cold” and “Black Eye”), both around 1999, on 7” format, pressing of 500 copies each. Those two estabilished them as a well known garage rock band throughout the international underground circuit, and set the band apart from most of the brazilian acts that sung in English at the time, since the receptivity for their work was of a much larger reach.

At the end of the year 2000 they finally released their EP, this time on Sweden’s Ken Rock, on 10” vinyl format. “Songs for a Knife Fight” was considered their best outcoming so far, and ended up in many best-of-the-year lists. During all that time, The Sellouts played out-of-control gigs in Brazil and gave a number of interviews to magazines and fanzines from the USA, Italy, Germany and Sweden, and were reviewed in publications from even further destinations such as Greece, at a time print media ruled the indie scene.

The band stopped it’s activities in the year 2000 shortly before the release of their 10” record due to personal breakdown. Nowadays, Marc Sellout is recording an album with As Cobras Malditas , and working on his solo project. Jonas has been working as a producer for Berlin Estúdio , a bar/club/recording studio that belongs to both, and has been playing around with his new band, The Blackneedles . Xandão, the live bass player and big friend has turned into a mod, but still plays punk with the Evil Idols .

"Too far from Hipsville. Babe."
A group that I (Joe Domino) have fully backed, fully indorsed, since the spawning of Blank Generation, has just released a 10" of bad days and even worse nights. A band that has what every modern Rip Off Records group wished they had - fuckin’ dynamism! This group, band, supermen…whatever…these kids are fucking itt (two T’s)! They bring on the rockaction like a twister, spiraling towards some disconcerted cow (the cow’s you by the way…). You look up with your little bell jingling (((moo))). You could run for greener pastures, a nice safe stable… But come on, how many of you think it’d be sooo very to put on a crash helmet and just leap right into that twister? Hands up! Okay. Hand’s down! The spaceshits and canfucks will wanna end up in Brasil (A.K.A. Hipsville). (JD)

"Muito longe do hype. Babe"
Levantem as mãos! Ok. Mãos pra baixo! Os garageiros do canadá e do mundo vão querer acabar no Brasil (também conhecido como hype).
