About Me

Latin Underground

... was founded by itself as a response to a social phenomenon that has violated the dignity and human rights of the Latin-American people for more than 500 years and that has been experienced by other cultures which have been victims of imperialism as well.
Moreover they are victims of international economic-political systems that do not represent anything other than the decadence and ignorance of their governments. Music, with its tremendous richness stemming from the mixture of cultures and folklore, has become a form of social protest for the oppressed people and has thus matured into the most representative and purest medium demonstrating a morally upright and intellectual perspective.
In the context of defending justice and human rights of indigenous peoples, mestizos and all human beings everywhere in the world, this kind of musical expression differs from commercial music, which abuses the same systems of power to propagate themselves and therefore manipulate the masses in their own interests.
In these times of indifference, in search of a multicultural space that has not been affected by globalization, this musical trend globalizes itself as a natural form of protest - rapidly, uncontrollably, autonomously.
Latin underground appears as a conscious outcry of the Latin community established in all parts of world, which can identify with and is familiar with this problem. Their European perspective opens new possibilities of support.
Latin underground represents a musical platform open to all varieties of musical and cultural defiance. It distances itself from the prejudices, unfortunately still in existence, against Latin-American culture, that did not permit the emergence of other artistic trends of this continent. The social, political, economic, migratory and urban problems are part of the melodious statements of thousands of artists who want to do something about increasing oppression in society. For many Latin-American people music provides a possibility to express their dissatisfaction; people who have for a long time been oppressed by military dictatorships, censorship of freedom of speech, illiteracy, corruption, abuse of power and many more reasons that have prevented non-elitist artistic groups to make themselves heard and express their opinions.
A music scene called “alterlatino” thus came into being, consisting mainly of Latin-American musical groups, who because of their great number cannot all be mentioned here. The splendid musical variety extends from Ska, Reggae, and Tropi-Punk to Electro-Cumbia, Hip Hop, and Latin-Underground. Their invaluable lyrics are largely written in Spanish unfortunately. They are messages of protest that neither give up nor lose hope for a more just society and reveal in a subtle way the above mentioned social-cultural background. Together with the contagious rhythms they beckon you to join an odyssey through Latin American reality.
